MARNI'S RECIPE

Over the years Marni has observed much more arthritis, skin problems and general ill health in dogs she looks after, and attributes this mostly to the comercial dog food they are fed.

Here is a homemade basic recipe ( tried and tested by many dogs for many years with great results), and can be adapted to suit the foods you have available, and the taste preference of your dog.

All the ingredients can be found in the supermarket.

Once cooked the dog food can be kept in the fridge for up to 3 days or frozen.

Before serving add leftover grated vegetables, or add  them during your cooking.

Start by feeding a small amount and work up to the right portion size for your dog.  This will depend on your dogs size, condition, the amount of daily exercize and climate.

You can vary the recipe and add different types of protein sources as below, and grated vegetables.

The following are a no no to dogs: potatoes, bread, pasta, wheat, garlic, onions, rasins, macadamia nuts or anything processed including most shop bought doggie treats.  A recipe for healthy crackers is included and is great for their teeth.

Ingredients

2 cups unflavoured soupmix (wheat free, e.g sunvalley, or a combination of lentils, split peas, barley, quinoa, millet, polenta, pinto beans and or buckwheat. A variety is great)

2 cups brown rice

8 cups water plus extra if needed

1/2 cup dessicated coconut

3 cups rolled oats

2 tsp turmeric

handfull of dates

Cook the soupmix, rice, coconut and turmeric until soft.

Add the rolled oats and more water, put the lid on and take off the heat and leave to cool down.

Add grated vegetables to the mixture or add on the day of feeding e.g.cabbage, carrots, beetroot, pumpkin, kumera, zuchini, dark green leafy vegetables.

Small amounts of sardines or mackeral and or free range eggs can be added on the day to boost the flavour, especially  for fussy eaters.

Mash well

Small amounts of food oil may be added e.g. olive, flax, sunflower oil or tahini etc.  Great for their coat!

Remember why you are doing this… to keep your dog healthy, happy and active and be your best friend for a long time to come without all the usual health issues.

It wont benefit your pet if you are still feeding him/her (even occassionally) processed pet food or processed human food!

Doing a big cook up every couple of weeks keeps your freezer stocked  busy for those busy days… its easy enough to pull a tupperware container of homecooked food out of the freezer in the morning… around the same amount of time it takes to open a tin of food… (not to mention it being more eco friendly – less tins and packaging)
